Clearly, I’m not the only “seasoned” player that has never heard a leslie referred to as a “lester”.. (thanks for chiming in Tony).. yes maybe it’s a regional thing.. but I have to say that I’ve been a member of, or in this case the moderator of, a number of Hammond related forums and I have NEVER heard a leslie called a lester.

Now let’s get back to talking about some clone sims.. I’ve heard a couple of recordings of the Hammond XK-5 that are sounding really good, but they’re almost always through a leslie. So, I’m still not convinced that Hammond has built a good leslie sim into the XK-5..
Anyone have any good recordings of the internal XK-5 sim they could post...?

The "lester"?   Yeah, no.
Never heard that term.  Spinners.  Spinny thing.   Rotor.   Heard those, but never in my entire life did anyone ever use the term Lester.   I aint that young but ....
As for sims not faring well vs mic'd leslies.....I hate to say it, but the more the PA is handling the room, the better the sims actually do.   Sorry to say it, but it is what it is.   i still carry a LESLIE so it's not like I have a point to prove.  But if the PA is carrying the room....I'll think twice.

Goff,

I’ve never heard of a leslie referred to as a “lester”.. but if you say so, who am I to disagree (as the song says).. your explanation makes sense but without it, the post was a tad bit confusing, given the fact that a “lester” is a model of leslie pedal..
However given your explanation I think we’re making capiche now.. ;-)

dear guys, craig, barry..
i see... since the digitizing of this forum the old world term for "lester" was stolen from us old guys (don't worry scott hawthorne i'm coming to your emotional rescue) who used it way before it became the name of a pedal and patented by EHX to become a pedal's name. since of course the loving term for leslie was lester, autocorrect notwithstanding, i did intentionally use the term "lester" for leslie as we know that mike mathews was around then to know this and subsequently now we know this on this forum.. similar to what happened to Thomas Organ and the "cry-baby" wah pedal. it was a you snooze you lose scenario.
that's what i think!

As far as not being able to tell a difference in FOH of a real "lester-lie" and a "VENT-ster" or even on a recording, i beg to disagree.
for the months i monitored the eastbay grease guys' performances before they arrived for their show, i always thought the organ sounded unusual. it didn't blend with the band as i'd heard the songs before. they were of course using a hammond B3mk2 and a 3300 where they could find one, mostly in conus and japan, as roger is an endorser, http://hammondorganco.com/wp-content/plugins/doptg/uploads/cftgn3nBcyDm9StELXdpWbPw4Y2WjYaX7jmqkO5ekDstqL3g3LNZSjmxGPrYmXMhN.jpg

but  then, when they arrived, did i hear what they needed to do with a vent as it wasn't in the rider. all they put was "two leslie outputs" in the rider. who knew what that was about other than needing a power relay and two lester-lies? when talking with their sound engineer during set up and line-check, he told me all their concerts were done with a Vent going out to the PA/recorder.
they had bob S make them a universal adapter for a vent to a 122/147.
for some reason it did not work even using a power relay to get two lester-lies to work.
http://www.tonewheelgeneral.com/images/pwrrelay.jpg

and as i mentioned, i heard the band many times in different venues, before roger took over from chester, even a parking lot swap meet with no stage, as well as listened to their albums, hence i for one could tell the lester-lie was not sounding normal in the mix.
i got this sense of watching a clutch cargo cartoon....

the lips are moving but the rest is fake.
there is something about how the organ mixes with the rest of the band that was off with the vent vs the real thing.

look here @1:12 you can see two lester-lie's but according to mike their engineer, those were for roger and the band not for the audience.

since you just picked up a B3/122 craig, (it was you wasn't it?)  that puts you in the same group of us old guys who switched to a tranny-clone (oops is this not PC to use anymore?) because of not being able to move the real thing. i only did that back in the early 80's as doing a cover band for me at that time was not worth hauling the real thing.
me now, providing backline to the majors, hence the unlimited roadie population.
i assumed that someone would figure this out without being too blatant.
my bad.
