Subject:Re: Overdrive Pedals for B3 Clones

Hi Gary,
Good to hear from you. Yes the organ whether clone or not is all about the treachery of the user. Case in point, Bill "welcome to the dance" Champlin. Glad to hear you're working with him. I've followed that man every where. Last time I saw him was with James and Mic up in San Juan Cap. Bill was his usual self still affected by his less than famous stature in the music industry yet a "god" to those who know him as the Sons. I've seen Bill numerous times over the decades on a B, a Beer chop and he gets good Ham tones off and on recordings. Never saw him with Chicago which wasn't really Bill on organ not like he was with the Sons. I get good use out of a clone and a real Leslie while my two B3's are still there and get occasional use. I can see where a Vent would have its uses but have not had the opportunity to avail of one.

Hi Goff!

There is no doubt that that a well-adjusted and accessorized clone can sound great.  I actually had a lot of fun experimenting with the settings, NOS tubes, effects (the Ventilator and the Tall and Fat are incredible), as well as various amplification setups.  I use a stereo pair of KV2 EX10 monitors running in stereo on the floor on each side of me.  I also run my vocal and other monitor mixes through those.  The Ventilator sounds incredible in stereo and it sounded so good with the C3 it was inspirational (I’m still looking for a 122 though 😊).  That oil smell from the C3 brought back a lot of memories (kind of like the burning oil smell of an old British sports car)!   I rarely play out anymore but I had to try this thing out live.  I am still a big advocate of the clones when they are well set up.  I have seen some big shows where the clones sounded so terrible it was unbearable and others where it sounded amazing.  I don’t think which clone you use is as important as how you set it up and of course there are those players that are so good it doesn’t matter what they are playing on (I am not one of them 😊).  I have been doing some work with Bill Champlin the last few years who almost always uses a tonewheel rig.  It sounded so good I finally broke down and got one.  I haven’t had a full on B3/C3 for 20 years or so and thought I would treat myself.  I am in the market for a 122 if anyone has one for sale.  It can have lots of road rash and I can rebuild it if necessary so condition is not that important.  On another note I see that the VB3 II is out.  I always liked the sound of the original.  I am looking forward to checking that out.  It has been promised as a standalone plug in for many years…..

Cheers,

Gary

It always depends on what compromises one is willing to accept. Having the real thing is always inspirational. But a well put together clone can bring smiles.

Some use an old tube preamp like the Eico HF85 to mimick the AO28.
