Subject:Re: VR 09 organ
The FA-07 has pretty good organs. However if you are very very picky about your organ sounds it likely won’t satisfy you. I use it with a live band and I think it works just fine. You also have no Chorus/Vibrato in the FA series for whatever reason…there is a means to alter drawbars on its screen but no real way to modify them easily in realtime unless you have Ocean Beach Digital DB-1. They do work in realtime really well as I have a set and have tried them out. If you want a basic board with piano/organ/limited synths that’s very portable the VR-09 is awesome. I’m having a hard time deciding to sell mine since I got an FA-07. If you want more than organ/piano/limited synth the FA-07 is the way too go…I don’t use the VR-09 out live anymore…and I get a decent enough organ to cover some Tom Petty(Benmont Tench)…it’s not as light weight as the VR but it’s still very light and a great bang for the buck all the way around…and you can add two sets of sounds as well as trigger samples with the pads…

I don’t own an FA keyboard, but I believe that it’s basically the same “supernatural” drawbar organ engine that’s in the VR-09, so soundwise it should be the same. However, I don’t know if the organ engine in the FA has been updated to the same extent as the VR-09? If it doesn’t have the new Type 3 leslie sim, and it doesn’t have the overdrive mix parameter, the sound of the FA will not be as good as the VR.
As you said, the FA doesn’t have physical drawbars but it also doesn’t have the same dedicated buttons that you have on the VR and there will be some parameters that you can’t get at, or you can’t get at without a deep dive into the menu. I recall someone saying that this is the case with the Chorus/Vibrato.
Hopefully there is a member here, that knows the FA and the VR-09, who can give you a more definitive answer. If not there is a VR-09 group on facebook, you might join and post the question there.

I just have one question, having a vr09 is great but I do miss layering more than 2 sounds.. So there is the FA07, it seems to have a lot of the settings that vr09 has with things like leakage and rotary control speeds, etc.. of course it doesnt have the physical drawbars but for the most part, once I have an organ setting I like I dont adjust the bars during a song anyway.. And there are sounds I need which are not readily available.. things like a sitar sound or bagpipe, which I know some of them you can get if you go deep sea diving, so I have another keyboard that compliments it well, the yamaha mx49 which has lots more sounds, and its main weakness is the organ but who cares when you have the vr09.. but if you get an FA07, you can layer up to 16 sounds.. or 8 and 8 on a split. etc.. and what Im wondering mostly is do I lose anything other than physical drawbars with the FA compared to the vr09? the fa07 with 73 or 76 keys.. and only 18 pounds could replace both keyboards from a gigging standpoint... any thoughts on that?

Norm - you gotta upgrade that VR09 firmware, my man.
I stopped bring the Vent to rehearsal when I upgraded mine. I run mono into an NX55P those days. I still run Vent when playing it at gigs. I like the overdrive better, it sounds like when the tubes just barely get cookin'.
