Jack,
That is very true, in fact, it also applies to hardware as well.. I've owned almost every clone that has ever been available in the last 10 years and I cannot recall being impressed with the factory presets on very many of them.. my recollection is that the Numa and Mojo organs impressed me right out of the box, but every other clone ranged from meh.. to awful. To my ears, the worst was the Hammond SK series.. it's taken 3 years of updates, along with loading 3rd party tonewheel sets, for the SK to finally to finally sound good), and the Kronos CX3 emulation was really bad too...... the factory patches were AWFUL!!!
Unfortunately it's true.. you can't really judge an instrument based on on-line demos (or even factory presets..!) you really need to own, and tweak it yourself, it to see if you can make this instrument sound the way you like it!!
