Subject:Re: Best Hammond Organ Clone 2017
I expect that people see me as having bias towards the Mojo brand, and against the Hammond Suzuki stuff.. (as described by Raisindot below) and while that's not how I see it, I can understand someone might come to that conclusion. I happen to think that VB3CE2 in the mojo/mojo61/Gemini products is the best sounding engine available at this point in time, but that's based on having owned and played most of these other clones.. it is natural to develop a preference.. However, the fact is that my opinion could easily change with the release of something new (like the new Hammond Suzuki XK-5) or a simple update for one of the other players in the market!!
As far as my "animosity" towards Hammond Suzuki, I don't see myself as a "hammond hater".. I just find that I am repeatedly disappointed with their products and their tactics.. However, when a new product becomes available, especially a Hammond Suzuki product, I am often one of the first to purchase it and I always approach every new product with an open mind. I have held off ordering a new XK-5 because it's f-ing expensive AND because of the numerous early life problems that many users have experienced (I had a similar bad experience with an early production Hammond Suzuki SK1 a few years back). Maybe 6 months from now, I will give the XK-5 a try..
I just wanted to comment on a couple of Raisindot's points below.
The issues that were raised regarding the Mojo Editor (hidden USB port etc), do not exist on the new Mojo 61.. it has built in wifi and it can be edited from an phone, ipad or laptop by simply connecting to a URL. This makes editing very easy.
Regarding the VR-09, while it is the best Hammond/leslie emulation available from Roland so far, it does not quite have the same level of authenticity as the newer boutique clones (Mojo/KeyB,HOAX based), or the Nord/Hammond Suzuki products. While it is excellent value for an "all-in-one" keyboard, it's Hammond/Leslie emulation leaves a bit to be desired. On a budget I wouldn't hesitate to consider it, I still own one, and I have always given the VR-09 great kudos for all that it is, but I believe the OP posted a "price is no object" question, and in that case, I wouldn't consider the VR-09.
I owned an original Numa, based on the KeyB engine, and I loved it. It sounded great and it had a great interface.. but mine had problems AND it had a very quirky midi implementation that I could not work with, so it was returned.. However, I really liked the sound of it, including the leslie sim, and the feel of the keyboard and Hammond style interface was great.
