Subject:Re: VR-760 Output hack

Ben
As for an organ hack, I was thinking about adding a separate organ output to use for a leslie or simulator.  I haven't looked inside my 760 yet but if the top can be easily removed my plan was to feed off the rotary sound on/off switch. Not sure how well it might work or if the signal is mono or stereo where the sound feeds into the switch, before the rotary effect seems like an easy way to access the organ.
Keep in mind that I haven't done this mod so there may be a few reasons why it might not work.

I used my Roland VR-760 for quite a few years with an Ultimate Sounds add in card. I replaced it for organ sounds with my SK-1. Thinking of selling it but your post made me nostalgic for it LOL

The manual says that organ doesn't respond to MIDI pan...I digress, but before I worked on the panning trick, I took the back off the VR-760 to see if there was an obvious way to hack internally-- no such luck w/o a service manual but I was surprised to see 2 un-populated AKM 24bit DAC chip footprints (and associated components) on the main board right next to the populated DAC.  I wonder if they were for different DAC options or if there was a plan for multiple outputs at some point... Anyone know a roland insider?  Was happy enough with the quality of the electronics inside the keyboard-- definitely a pro instrument.

I actually think the built in leslie sim is serviceable in combination with the EQ knobs, but my rig of choice will be VR-760 on top of a Rhodes 73-- Organ into a leslie, Rhodes into an SVT 4 Pro (loud rig) into a 1x12 cabinet (with a full range speaker from a SS leslie-- 825?) or a smaller power amp w/Joe Meek MQ-3 as preamp. For either I  use a mixer in the FX loop return.  I use some stomp boxes on the Rhodes with the out-of production Morley FX blender to give wet/dry control on a foot pedal) to blend in the non-organ sounds from the VR-760 so it isn't any extra gear to do the phase cancellation trick.
I think any dark amp/cabinet is a good match for this keyboard and was really surprised when I heard it through the leslie.  I used to use B4 and briefly owned an XK-1 and have a PC361 (for sale-- make me an offer, just isn't immediate enough for me with regard to both action and programming).  The VK -8 has best action and I really like the percussion sound but it definitely has more of a "chorus" vs. scanner vibrato.  It is a really bright organ but I think it is good organ ear training to listen to drawbarsvs. just going by the numbers for registrations.
I like the fact that if there isn't room for a leslie, I can fall back on the VR-760 sim, and if the set is too short to justify dragging out the Rhodes there are the built-in sounds... and enough keys to actually play in split moed.  I'm also seriously considering the EP SRX-12 module (in case anyone has experience with it vs. the SRX-07 ultimate keys) too.
Too much gear but most of it was acquired used... Funny my use of a Rhodes is probably much like your P250 for primary keyboard.  Maybe that factors into why we're happy with the VR-760?  I don't think I would want to practice piano/electric pia no at length on it but once drums and guitars are in the mix I don't think any non-musicians will notice/care.
