I have just downloaded manuals for both - Axiom and VB3, and read thru.

Axiom indeed has a function for assigning controllers to MIDI CC
numbers.

VB3 has default MIDI map, where CC7 controls overall volume, CC11
expression.

Besides there's a function MIDI Learn, so you can easily assign
incoming MIDI data to some internal parameter.

So if you use this default map, it should work with proper data on
MIDI input.
Probably the problem is in Axiom, it doesn't transmit CC data 7 or 11
- check its setting.
