There are a bunch of factors that come into play. As Goff mentioned,
the use of C3 (or occasionally, C1) vibrato makes a difference by adding
a bit of high end. So does the lack of close-mic'ing. (A lot of gospel
recordings are deliberately mic'ed in an ensemble style.) If the mics
are shoved close enough to the horns, the end result has a very
directional 'shoop' when the horn goes by the mic, which is often
misinterpreted as removing the diffusers. That's not to say that the
diffusers *aren't* removed sometimes, but I can get a very similar sound
on a Leslie with diffusers by using different mic'ing techniques.

I believe that the Vent is modeled after the sound with diffusers *on*
-- at least, it sounds so to my ears.
