Subject:Re: Distortion/Overdrive Pedal Recommendations Please!
i heard and saw gregg play out of a stock rented rig with a 122, being pretty close to his leslie as he performed. he got basically the same rollie sound although not like as on his records which could've been because of preamp/mic/studio/eq/gain tweaks.
it was the way gregg used his bars and expression pedal when i heard him with his santana.
that being said, there are grail leslies out there and i've heard one, a 145 in a studio. to die for, so the cliche. growled naturally though stock, circa 1970's era when mods to these were reserved for the rich and famous. one in a thousand.
basically rollie's sound is leslie amp/crossover/speaker overdrive that is happening. where the woofer starts to break up and gurgle or bark.
the distortion on your sk is not going to do that for you.
and "distortion" is not the only type of pedal/effect. there is "overdrive" as well which when used properly will do what it says.
so do we "distort" the signal or "overdrive" it?
point expressed that you might blow your driver as you are using a clone. the highs on a clone are much stronger and an extended range. they go on out past real hammonds. i have blown a stock v21 using a clone vs while on a real b3/122 stock, amp on 10 never blew anything playing live 4/6 since i've owned it.
went to a 100 watt ferro driver for the clone use. (in another studio leslie). retained the stock utah 16 ohm but it was reconed. under the right gain staging, the woofer barks but then i'm using a mackie power amp with tube preamps. so there is a technique not solely with a stock leslie amp.
you didn't mention how you interfaced your SK with your 145. pedal? direct out with a pin converter?
if pedal what brand? does it have volume/tone control?
but something like the boss hyper fuzz will wake up any quiet amp to where you use the gain over the distortion to get the amp to break up. not to distort the sound.

the gain boost setting on this pedal will knock the snot out of any amp. the fuzz settings suck. the silver lining is the gain boost. they were made back in the day in japan so you're looking at a benjamin at least to get one on fleabay.

you would need to use a leslie pedal and the 1/4" line out of your SK to get closer. put the overdrive in between the sk and the leslie pedal. mix to taste. ergo, your volume control on your sk, the volume on the leslie pedal, and then the gain boost on the overdrive pedal. it will take finagling. but you asked for it.
