My experience has been pretty much the same as yours. (--However, I haven't been able to get used to using them playing live, it just detracts too much from the experience and throws me off.)
I do use them on Summer Bar gigs when we can get ridiculously loud, but not often on Wedding / corporate gigs.
But I have to admit to 15 years of tinnitus and my ears sure aren't what they used to be. What......what.....??

(Don't know why my original response didn't go through.....)
I got molded musicians earplugs years ago as a professional piano tuner, and they worked well to reduce the impact on my eardrums, and to help isolate the piano tones I was listening for from ambient room noise. However, I haven't been able to get used to using them playing live, it just detracts too much from the experience and throws me off. Do you other performers use them successfully?
