one of the plugins i have on an audio editor has "40 year old hearing" as an eq setting. like everything, human age has its say. living in a city is already hearing-damage ville and i'm willing to bet electro magnetic radiation from cell/wifi/microwave and even the electrical wiring in homes and buildings is creating a din if not just the sounds of life within a city, moreso if you live on a street in new york city downtown somewhere. i know people who grew up without electricity. no they're not amish but pert near being provincial rural farmer types who plant and harvest by hand and their hearing is dog quality.

but they can sleep through a cricket party while i can't.

i know for myself, when the power glitches and goes out, the ringing in my ears stop until the power comes back on.
