No, there's two different things here --

* Selective listening: filtering out 'noise' about things that
interest your spouse, but not yourself.

* "I swear, you're going deaf." My wife says this all the time,
because of the volume that I listen/play music. It has *nothing* to
do with deafness; it's the way I like music to be: all-encompassing,
a visceral as well as auditory experience. And it's nearly
impossible to get that experience when the music is only played
soft. My wife doesn't like crescendos -- in movies, too; I love them.
