Since we've been yammering about the VR09 lately, I thought i would share this tip:

The VR-09 works very well with the Yamaha FC-7 as such:

1 - create a pigtail cable to invert tip and ring
2 - wire a 47K resistor between tip and sleeve
3 - wire a 47K resistor between tip and ring
4 - select expression curve #4

Tip and ring are per the plug that enters the VR09. I suggest spending the extra ten cents for 1% resistors.

You will get adjustment along the entire length of the pedal, with correct minimum and maximum volume, and a solidly usable section in the middle. The resistors both adjust the maximum volume point (around 22-23K FWIW) and makes the pot effectively more logarithmic.

I have no idea if this is what's inside the Ashby cable or not, as I do not own one. I initially tried just inverting tip and ring as some folks have suggested, but I was still dissatisfied with the pedal throw.

Check your work: it's theoretically possible that you lose a bit of max volume if you get really unlucky with pot and resistors tolerances.  Play a note with the pedal floored, and unplug the pedal. The volume should not change.  If it does, replace the 47K resistors with 56K.

If anybody wants to take my trivial idea and build a commercial product around it, go for it, consider this your no-cost royalty-free license in perpetuity.
