Bruce, you are absolutely right on this point.. we clonewheelers tend to look at this as a clone (although some take exception to that based on it's lack of waterfall keyboard and perc going through the CV), but the VR-09 is definitely not designed to solely be a Hammond clone.. This is obvious not just when you look at it's sound capabilities (ie, drawbar organ, sample player, virtual analog synth) but especially when you consider the drum sounds/sequences, effects section and all of it's "looper" capabilities! It might not be quite that simple. The sum of all the functions that the VR provides (piano, synth, splits, effects, drum machine, etc.) are likely tasking the capabilities of the DSP at certain points. As mentioned, the internal audio paths of a console Hammond are more complex than one might think, and while dry percussion looks simple in a block diagram, it might result in a difficult calculation in the DSP. And even if it doesn't, Roland likely had a time budget for programming each of the sound sections, and ROM size considerations. They had to make decisions about 'important' features vs. lesser ones. Yes, a faster DSP, more software tricks, or extra ROM/RAM might fix this, but these kinds of tradeoffs are common in 'value' instruments, and the VR-09 is clearly in that category. I'll bet that similar tradeoffs could be found in other areas lie the sequencer and piano samples.
IMHO, Roland doesn't treat the VR-09 as an 'organ with additional synths, pianos, and effects.' They consider it a value-priced all-around keyboard for gigging. The fact that it has a better organ module than some of its lower-priced competition doesn't change this situation -- except, perhaps, in a clonewheeler's mind. Roland UK's SonicState demo on YouTube spends less than three minutes (out of 18:22) focusing on the tonewheel organ section, about the same time allotted to other sections like the piano and drum machine..
