I asked Roland Tech Support what could be done settings-wise to improve the Leslie sim. They responded to buy a Stereo keyboard amp and use an iPad to tweak the settings. They don't seem to think there's any reason to try to improve the Leslie Sim. Or for an Android VR-09 App. jp

The leslie settings are what I would be most interested in because I don’t think the default setting are fast enough and need to be tweaked. I’ll look at the settings I messed with over last weekend and post them here in a day or two…Maybe Roland will add another leslie or two and mic distance that would be killer…I’m also thinking about asking Ed Diaz (A Roland Clinician) about what settings he uses on his VR-09…as it has been stated here on numerous times there really is a great bang for the buck factor with this board…all I need to do is spend some more time doing some tweaking…If you have settings feel free to share them…If Norm is out there I know he’s probably done some tweaking and they’re bound to be good…Stay tuned…

I bought one of the new stereo by-pass versions of the Vent and it works well with the VR-09…To be honest if you are rushed and aren’t that “anal” about your leslie sim I think you could get by with just the VR-09…the built in sim does need some tweaking…it’s missing the “air and some balls” that external sims provide, if you know what I mean. I spent a little time messing about comparing the sound of the onboard and tweaking it to match the Vent as close as possible(YMMV LOL) I managed to get it kind of close(note: I didn’t say right on the money but close) I think in a live rock and roll band it would work by itself in a pinch…Add an 88-note board below (MOXF8, Krome, etc.) you’d be able to cover just about anything IMHO…And the rig would be light an d easy to move…the cat’s ass as I would say…

The VR-09/Burn combination would probably be a great low cost simple rig, especially if you're mostly organ. The burn will give you a noticeably better Leslie sim, and better overdrive than the vr-09 by itself.
That said, when I hook up my VR-09 and my Burn I hear a tiny bit of noise on the audio output IF I connect the two devices via midi, but this ONLY occurs when they are connected via midi. The noise is very faint, and it wouldn't be noticeable in a mix but I can hear it when I'm not playing and the amp is turned up loud. This may not happen in all cases but it happens with mine. Just an FYI.
These kind of problems, are the reason I haven't moved to a VST based rig yet. There just seems to be too many things that can go wrong with a VST rig.. More devices, more cables (power, audio, and midi).. IF I was going to use a VST based rig I would have built in redundancy by using inexpensive HW synths (like the VR-09 or the Casio PX-5S) as controllers rather than simple controllers.. This way you always have backup. If the VST rig craps out you just use the HW synth.. VR-09 isn't that much more expensive than a good quality controller.

It's a lot to cable up even if I work real fast and because of the pressure I forgot to make two USB connections so my Forte host software wouldn't run and by the time I'd sorted the problem and rebooted, the band was 15 minutes late getting on and we had to reduce our set and I wasn't very popular. The Roland VR-O9, possibly also with the Burn, is about as simple as it gets, and the VR-09 has good reports here. Any other suggestions? I play about 90% clone wheel organ (mainly VB3 but also a bit of B4) and 10% piano.
