I also recall there being problems, incompatibility between early interpretations by different manufacturers. Yamaha and Roland for sure... Btw, I just came across my original MPU-401 midi adapter for PC.. That I used with personal composer software to sequence the early midi stuff.. It didn't work very well and I switched to sequencer plus which was great (for the time)
