was merely commenting on what was posted regarding vb3 as the clips i've heard are good enough to rival hardware. whether the sim is good enough or interfaces with a vent well enough was not part of my thinking. i tend to use real leslies anyway, always noting that with electronics you never get everything in one package.

that said, the basic tonewheel tone has to at least be appealing to the user. the sim is by nature so far, 2nd fiddle on these clones.
again, laurens made the organ don made the leslie.

Sorry. The VB3 Leslie and overdrive sim is not in the same league as the Vent. Plus, the VB3 sounds pretty bad when you run it through a Vent. Sort of the worse of both worlds.

I'd still offer that the VB3 software is superior to any of the hardware keyboard based B3 emulators.

Agreed.  As a Vent dealer, I really wanted to know what the differences were, so I set up a Vent I, and Vent II, and a mini-Vent for Organ with a Nord Electro 3.  I tried several different drawbar registrations, with and without C3 vibrato.  I spent a whole afternoon testing, with occasional 'ear breaks.'  Here's what my ears heard:

- At the same Drive/Distance settings, with the Speed, Acceleration, and Balance on the Vent II set to match the Mini, there is no difference whatsoever between the two.  Of course, the Vent II is capable of more adjustments, so if one prefers the Balance at 9:00 or the Acceleration at maximum (5:00), the Vent II wins the battle.  But if the goal is a standard mic'ed Leslie 122, both versions deliver nicely.

- Both the Mini and Vent II sound a little different than the original Ventilator (Vent I).  The difference is VERY subtle, but if we had them side by side and I pointed it out, I'm sure that many list members could hear it -- or at least, LEARN to hear it over repeated A:B tests.  It's easy to compensate with a small amount of EQ.  How small?  On the NE3, I can get there by setting the Treble to -2.5, and the Mid to -2.5 at 800Hz.  (Bass at 12:00.)  Personally, I think I like 'edge' of the new sound -- which is likely due to a change in the horn algorithm -- but if one misses the EXACT tone of the Vent I, it's pretty easy to get there on the others.

YMMV -- but I'm betting it won't.  I was pointedly trying to figure out a) if I was selling a product that could never live up to the original; and b) if I had been a fool to sell my personal Vent I.  I went looking for the difference, determined to flush it out.  It was small, and easily compensated out.

-BW

As far as I know, all the vent models from the original to the vent 2 use the same basic algorithm, with only a few minor tweaks along the way. The Ventilator 2 has a new level of editability perhaps, but i don't think that the vent 2 sounds noticeably more authentic. In fact, I think that most people when describing the mini-vent or the vent 2 would say "it's got the same great ventilator sound"!

Why the mini-Vent?  What about the original Ventilator or the Ventilator II, which IMHO now takes its predecessor to a new level of authenticity?
