Subject:Re: Main stage 3

Speaking as a MainStage only user for live gigging, but nowhere near the standing of a national touring artist. here is my take on MS3 and VB3.
First MainStage is a VST host that provides similar functionality to VST hosts available on for Windows such as Cantabile and Forte. It started out as a subset of Logic but with each iteration grows as a dedicted live performance app.
I switched from Cantabile to Mainstage several years ago becasue MainStage has the support of Apple and the capacity to do onging development and support,  only MainStage provides an onscreen GIU showing all all mapped controlls, splits and layers and because MainStage comes with over 30 gig of Logic instruments including modelled and sampled synths, AP's and EP's and a Hammond clone upgraded with MS3 and now called Vintage B3. The Logic VST's cover every base and all are pretty good. None may be the best in category but as a user I only have to purchase the third party apps where the included Logic instruments don't cut it for me.

MS3 is 64 bit only so any legacy 32 bit VSTs will not work - unless you purchase 32 Lives which puts a 64 but wrapper around legacy VST's that the developer has not upgraded to 64 bit. There are only 2 legacy VST's in wide spread use that have not been upgraded - VB3 and Slyenth1.  Both are now available in bundled package from Sound Radix with 32 Lives.
MS3 is still evolving for example the default setting in MS2 that turns off the screen saver in perform mode was only reinstated in the 3.1.1 update released a fortnight ago.
VB3 v Vintage B3
As part of my upgrade I purchased a new machine (i7 with 16gig of RAM) running Yosemite and MS3. I tried for 2 weeks to tweak Vintage B3 to my liking - it is very tweakable like VB3. I was determined not spend another $100 on 32 lives and could not understand why the developer of the world's best software Hammond emulation would abandon it and let it slide into legacy land.  But I could not eliminate the bright and brittle top end in Vintage B3 nor could I get the same mix of percussion key click etc, sound on the 88800000 comping setting.

To my ears the Logic Vintage B3 at the core sound engine level sounds more like NI B4 II than VB3.  I then found a discount retailer of 32 lives and bought and installed it.  Instantly back in VB3 heaven.  To my ears VB3 1.4 with all the shortcomings that have been previously neem noted with overdrive etc is still the best Hammond clone available. Guido got something fundamentally right in this software. Shame he has lost interest and switched his focus to being a boutique player in an already overcrowded hardware manufacturing industry.

But there is one wrinkle in 32 Lives which I have reported to Sound Radix, they are able replicate and are working on fix for, and that is CPU spike and system overload message when a concert with a VB3 is first loaded, and then when VB3 is first used in that session.

This is not addressed in the 1.0.6 update released two days ago, but I would expert it will be in the next update which will be released after they get back from MusicMesse.

Mainstage is very big on the touring circuit…lots of players using  controllers and loads of VST’s/plugins. I still have MS 2 and will soon be upgrading…  How does the MS 3 clone compare to the MS 2 and VB3 in the “balls” department? I think VB3 has this one but haven’t heard the new MS yet???  Cheers,Brian In Ohio
