There is an easy workaround with the 1'DB and percussion issue. I just use the B natural preset whenever I use percussion, and switch to the Bb preset when I don't use it. Just like I do on my B3's.
Apple makes some very strange decisions on their classic instrument controls and tone modelling. They really need a Mellotron expert to consult with them on their tron samples.  They are very good, but they went overboard on making it sound "dirty". As I said in another KC post, one of the reasons that the sound of the Mellotron is so distinctive are the imperfections in the original recordings, dynamics, and pitch from note to note. You really have to sample EACH note for the full 8 seconds because the magic happens when you play more than one note at the same time. Pitches and dynamics mix over the 8 second playback time. Certain chord sounds are identifiable as a "classic signature" Mellotron sound (like 3 Violins mid Em, D, and Am).
Most users could care less about this. They look at the sample sets and say "Hey cool, there are Mellotron sounds included." But a trained ear can hear these distinctions quite clearly.

I actually liked the morphing feature, although I rarely panned into it; I used a switch controller.  It was just a nice way to quickly change to a radically different preset, something that would take a few seconds -- and some training -- to do on the DBs themselves.

For my live rig I am using a 20-yr-old Alesis Quadrasynth Plus and a Novation Impulse 61. I use the acoustic piano sound in the Alesis and also use it as a MIDI controller. I have a 7-yr-old 13" MacBook running RAX, an AU host. I'm running VB3, which is controlled by the Impulse. The Impulse has a pre-programmed template that works with VB3, and it has 9 sliders that work a drawbars. I also have Minimonsta installed, as well as NI's Komplete Classics. So all I do is change MIDI channels on the Alesis, and I can switch between acoustic and electric pianos, a Clav, PRO-53 (Prophet 5) and Minimonsta (MiniMoog). It's an old controller connected to an old Mac running old software - and it sounds killer!
