Subject:Re: Mojo update v.2.21 questions!

Craig,
thank you for your answer!

"Manuel,
As far as I am aware, there is nothing about the version 2.21 that would change the sound significantly, except in the area of the leslie sim, which is significantly improved. I am not aware of any reason why moving from one OS to another would create a problem with your sound card. This makes no sense at all, and if this WAS true it's something you would have to get assistance from Crumar on.. I doubt anyone here could help you with that kind of problem. "

In the version 2.21, the global sound is a bit different than in old versions. For example, when I updated from the version 2.11 to the 2.13, I noticed the percussion sound was modified. The actual version 2.21 has exactly the same kind of the percussion sound as that version (that sound remember me the Korg CX-3). So, I reverted to the old version.

"That said, virtually everything you are complaining about is tweakable using the Mojo interface.. Have you hooked up a monitor and mouse and tried tweaking your Mojo yet (last time I heard from you, I believe you were refusing to hook up a monitor and actually go in and learn about the various editable parameters). IF during the update you have lost your previous edits/tweaks that could easily account for the difference in sound before and after the update AND while the tone of the Mojo hasn't really changed with this OS the defaults MAY have changed.. For example if you were using the a particular tonewheel set and the update returned you to the default set, that could account for some of the tone differences pre/post updates. "

During the update process everything was right !
Of course I hooked up a vga monitor and a mouse after the update and tried to tweak the Mojo for to get a similar sound as previously. In my life as a keyboard player I worked with several synths and always "made" my own complex sounds. The last I owned was the kurzweil k2000 (a great machine for programming, as you may well know).
Anyway, I will speak with Andrea about this.

"There are a lot of different ways to increase the bottom end on the Mojo.. bass control on the panel, brightness, tonewheel set, leslie settings, matching transformer etc.. and similarly there are a number of ways that you can increase the overall volume in the editor. "

Sorry, I can't find a bass or brightness controls! I used the same tonewheel set - B3 1969.
I even used the Matching Transformers to increase the lows, but the result wasn't satisfying.
In the Circuit option I couldn't get volume enough.
Perhaps you can tell me where can I alter these parameters!

"My understanding is that the Matching Transformer is where the tones are summed in a Hammond organ, before they go on into the amp. So if you think of it like this... when I press three notes on the keyboard and I have three drawbars pulled out, this actually results in 9 tones being sent to the matching transformer (3 drawbars X 3 notes = 9). They are combined by the matching transformer and then sent to the amp. "

"So how does that translate to the editable parameters in the Mojo? The matching transformer parameters on the Mojo really control the relative strength of each tone.. so if I want a brighter sound or I feel as if my 8' tone isn't strong enough I can increase the the 8' tone by increasing that parameter in the Mojo matching transformer editor. SO for example IF you want more bottom end, pushing up the lower tones in the matching transformer is one way to do this it's must as if you can move the lower drawbars further than 8 (like to 9 or 10).. imagine this as an amplifier who's volume control goes to 11, or 12. (yes like the spinal tap movie)"

"I actually use the matching transformer to differentiate between the organs I play in my classic rock band and the organ I play when I'm by myself.. when I play by myself I want more bottom end to kick bass, so I have created an organ where the 3 bottom tones are push up.. On the other hand when I play in my classic rock band I don't want to be stepping on my bass players tonal space, so I use the exactly the same organ (tonewheel set, leslie, C/V settings etc) but I simply pull back on the bottom tones and I have basically the same organ with slightly less bottom. BTW, having the new editor allows me to easily switch between 6 completely different organs... this is how I can now easily switch between completely organs in a second or two, and THIS IS AWESOME! "

Ok, thanks, I understood the process of the Matching Transformers.
So, the Mojo Editor is a good option?

"Now as far as the percussion goes, my Mojo on 2.21 sounds very authentic but I would describe it as more of a "woody thunk" than a bell. I don't like "bell-like" percussion.. When updated my Nord C2 to the C2D OS I thought that the percussion changed and sounded more "bell-like" and I did NOT like it.. we all hear things differently Manuel and none of us are looking for the exact same sound. So I'm not sure that I can help you on this. "

You are right, the percussion sounds more woody then bell-like. If you pay attention to an old Tony Monaco video demo, you will hear him refer to the percussion as having an incredible bell tone !

"Manuel, once again I have to strongly suggest that you get in and start tweaking your Mojo.. It's obvious to me that you have a VERY specific sound that you are trying to achieve and if you don't get in and learn how to tweak your Mojo, you will forever be lost, and depending on others to answer your questions.
Is I always have, on the Mojo forum, I will try my best to help you, but you need to help yourself too.
Craig "

Much obliged for your advice!
Manuel
