Subject:VR-09 clonewheel engine quality Re: What we all really want in our homes--a gigantic pipe organ!
Discerning as I've come to know Norman to be, I have a very difficult time believing that he would be as satisfied with the VR-09 clonewheel emulation on his projects has he has been with his ubiquitous (and quite well-done) VB3 tracks. Sure ... I could see him employing it live rather than schlepping around a laptop ... the Roland has a built-in keyboard after all ... but in the studio? Really?!
With a Neumann U-87 in the mic cabinet, why would one track with a VocoPro knockoff of a Shure SM-58, other than perhaps for an intentionally low-fi effect?
Best,
Fox
PS: By the way, FWIW, the most recent S/L video I could find on YouTube was "Money," uploaded 11/16 and, from what I was able to hear, I agree with Hammond Dave's assessment of the relative sound quality of the VR-09. I also concur with Keith that an SK/vent solution would still not approach the relative grandeur of a real-deal classic Hammond console/Leslie rig (at least I think that's what he meant by "No improvement there."). None of this is to "dis" the venerable VR-09 or any of its devotees. With the constant qualifier "for the money," it is undoubtedly a break-through axe. It's just no MOJO in its tonewheel emulation nor Kronos in either clonewheel engine or all-round capability. That's all...and at under a grand, nobody should expect it to be. It seems to be extraordinary bang for the buck.
