Subject:Re: What we all really want in our homes--a gigantic pipe organ!
Sorry Guys, my mistake, thanks for clarifying.. My last primary keyboards were the C1/C2/Mojo in that order.. none of which had the ring modulator (I don't believe), so that was in my mind when I made that comment. That said, I was really just trying to use the ring modulator of an example of unique way of using the Hammond.. There is no question in my mind that the VR-09, along with it's "live" style of interface, and it's ability to combine Hammond organ with a Virtual Analog Synth (in the same board,) provides a very unique opportunity for creativity. It would have been VERY interesting to see what a guy like Jon Lord would have done with an instrument, that half this group thinks is an abomination. I doubt very much that he would have cared about the keyboard, and I think he would have simply seen it as a fantastic instrument. The same could be said for a lot of different instruments from today.. What would he have done with a Korg Kronos for example..? A drawbar organ, and 8 other synth engines?? He did fantastic stuff, just with a Hammond, all by itself, imagine what he could do with a VR-09 or a Kronos. Regards,
Craig MacDonald

so does the vk8m and it is light-beam triggered like a theremin uses proximity.

Hi, Craig,
thanks for your words, I have the same opinion.

One other comment I want to add regarding the VR-09... This forum seems to be almost entirely focused on recreating sounds of the past rather than creating new sounds and new techniques.. That's not a bad thing necessarily, but I think that we overlook a lot of the creative possibilities that exist within these new hammond clones..
For example the first digital CX3 came with EX mode.. I never ventured into it myself, because all I was interested in was creating traditional organ sounds. However, it was a very interesting feature, that could be used to create some really new and interesting sounds.. It strikes me that we've stopped experimenting with our instruments, and stopped looking for new ways to use our hammonds/clones, and instead we just copy copy copy.. whether it's trying to perfectly copy someone else's sound, or a technique developed by someone else.
The original artists that we love, didn't spend their time copying other artists, other sounds and other techniques. They figured out their own unique ways to use their instruments. Great example of this is Jon Lord playing his hammond through a ring modulator.. very inventive..!
So how does this apply to the VR-09..? Well first of all, the VR-09 is the only clone that I know of that has a built in ring modulator.. (although the Kronos CX3 might have this).. but the VR-09 has an awesome "live" style of interface for controlling it's sound and effects, AND among other things it has a built in analog synth.. not only can the VR-09 to a reasonable job of this thing has a huge potential for creative variations on the traditional Hammond tone..
I wonder what Jon Lord would have done with an VR-09? What about our other favourite artists, what kind of awesome sounds could they coax out of it?? What if you could send 25 VR-09's back in time about 40-50 years to our favourite artists.. how different would the music that we're listening to today be?
I know that Norm is always writing and recording, and from what I know of his stuff he's a very creative/innovative musician.. I really look forward to hearing what Norm can do with this $899 piece of crap!!
GO Norm!!!
