floyd is/was not about hammond as it was about creating a texture and a mood.
if i'm not mistaken the performance below was created with 2 kurwzweils even if rick has his beer chop, i presume, next to him.
he was more of a synthesist.
like most brit bands using whatever gear they could get as hammonds then and now are hard to come by unlike in america.

floyd live is different than floyd in the studio and perhaps that's why i appreciated SOL as doing it live is harder. no retakes and punch-ins.
could SOL's keys guy have achieved a better tone? yes if we look at it from just the hammond/leslie angle. maybe he will catch drift of this thread and get himself a vent and use more ethereal fx (echorec anyone?) on his hamtone to get the "wright" sound, double entendre intended.
putting on a show like that, lights, backup singers in today's economy is no easy feat. there's the musicianship and then the music besides the gear and transpo logistics.
next we might drift OT into Gilmour's use of leslies, vibratones, yamaha RA rotary cabinets as mainstays of his arsenal and how his sound was melded with Wright's.

Wow I must not have any idea what a Hammond should sound like…I sat in the same room with them playing last night and I thought it sounded very respectable…I listened to it with my ears and with PC speakers this morning…To each his own I guess, I still want one and hope to use it out live eventually again so I can sound like crap too…LOL!!! Gotta Love Dave!!! At least we know how he really feels…That’s what I love about this group the great amount of diverse opinions and details as to what the listener felt was out of whack…I always value everyones opinion here and love this group!!! Subject: Re: [CWSG] Re: What we all really want in our homes--a gigantic pipe organ! Ok Dave, a couple of things 1. I only listened to the demo on my iPad and every thing sounds thin on that so maybe I'm not picking up on the inadequacies of the sound as I would if I was listening on something with some bottom end2. I also recognize that a tribute band has a little higher expectations with respect to recreating a specific type of hammond tone3. I've never been much of a pink Floyd fan so I don't have the same expectations as others might. 4. It's quite possible that I need to reset my ears and listen to more real hammond, you could be right about that. My BV needs an amp rebuild and my Franken-b has been in my garage for over a year.. (Sad but true) I've been totally "clone" for quite a while! That said I still don't think it sounded like crap.. Craig

Craig... With all due respect, you need to start listening to real Hammonds and Leslie's again. Not only did that organ clone tone sound thin and inauthentic, when he switched from tremolo to stop the horns did not wind down at all. And when you say "the sim didn't sound great on tremolo, overall I thought it was fine.", how is that acceptable? Where do you draw the line for how far off the instrument sounds until it's unacceptable? People are playing such crappy clones that they are losing touch with the real Hammond sound. I totally dig that the VR09 is acceptable to many our of colleagues as a lightweight, quick set up Swiss Army knife instrument, but to use it in a Pink Floyd tribute band where they are investing so much time and money in recreating the sound seems strange to me. If they want light and portable, do tribute to that band and use a SK with a Ventilator.
Rant over...

Wow Dave, that's pretty harsh! I know you don't like the Vr-09, but really? I only heard it through my iPad speakers, and while the sim didn't sound great on tremolo, overall I thought it was fine. Craig

Man that organ sounds like crap. I don't get it. Here are some very talented musicians spending a great amount of effort on recreating the essential look and feel of Pink Floyd, and they compromise on one of the signature sounds of that band?

Goff, It appears as though someone has posted some video from the show last evening not sure about the quality…They really do a great job of presenting Floyd material, I’m truly amazed that they can keep something like this with 9 people going especially in south western Ohio…This area is more known for the classic rock, country, alt-metal, and southern rock…I give them kudos for that feat alone… Cheers,Brian In Ohio From: CloneWheel@yahoogroups.com [mailto:CloneWheel@yahoogroups.com]
