I personally don't like the idea of one universal controller for
everything, I don't think it's possible to do - and if yes, it will be
only the compromise from performer's point of view.
Synthesizer needs for all sounds (except organ and piano) 73 (or less
or more) keys, half weighted with light touch, quick response and
repetition, with metal contacts, not rubber contacts, velocity (ideal
would be also release velocity as MIDI wanted originally - it's part
of the standard) and aftertouch (if possible polyphonic).
Digital piano must have 88 weighted keys of piano size simulating
hammer mechanics (more heavy touch, with changing weight from bass to
treble keys), with velocity, good response, quick repetition,
escapement system, ivory feel. Aftertouch can be omitted.
Tonewheel organ simulation needs two 61 keys manuals with waterfall
keys and light touch, and maybe even preset keys at left. Velocity and
aftertouch is not necessary. Quick repetition is important as well as
shallow switching.
Pipe organ simulation needs at least three 61 manuals simulating touch
of mechanical action.
How all this could be combined in one universal keyboard?
