Subject:Tinnitus
Fox,
I am sorry to hear about your tinnitus. I suffer from that as well and there is really very little that can be done. It varies in intensity but at times it is so bad I can’t sleep. I hope at some point there is an effective treatment available. There are others on this list that suffer with it as well. I worry that I may have to stop mixing and mastering at some point. When I do studio stuff I mix at a medium room volume and the ringing can interfere at times. Mixing live is less of a problem due to the higher SPL but after a show the ringing can be pretty bad. I supplied some gear for a 7 stage hip hop fest last weekend and wore earplugs almost the whole time because it was really loud and I can’t stand hip hop music or scratchin’ DJs….and I thought disco was bad!
Cheers,
Gary
BTW: I changed the subject line since we were getting OT from the original thread.

I agree Gary. I have pretty extreme tinnitus from >40 years playing live in really loud venues, and the in-ears also allow me to monitor at much lower levels, helping (hopefully) preserve what hearing I have left. The only thing I dislike about them is when FOH is so loud that it bleeds through, forcing me to restructure my Aviom mix to compensate or, more realistically, crank up my monitor mix a mix, hopefully not damaging my hearing further.
I suppose I could invest in a pair of OSHA-approved hearing protectors (like the big orange cans tarmac flight crews wear),, but I suppose that if I'm vain enough that I won't even wear headphones, those huge ugly flame-orange cans will never find a place in my gig bag ... I'm hoping for an answer in modern medicine and stem-cell regeneration therapy at some point in my lifetime ... but, if not, guess it could be worse ... Beethoven was totally deaf when he died (I guess all dead folks are totally deaf, eh?) and it is said that his own tinnitus literally drove him quite insane.
Best,
Fox
