I'm not sure I'd invest in a new keyboard just to try out a theory. Why not take your laptop, power pack, USB interface, a USB B to USB A cable, and a jack cable, to your local music store and ask to try out a USB keyboard using your own kit? (I've done it).

Another thing you could do is invest in a MIDI Out to USB convertor. But beware - I purchased a cheap one ($4.50) a year or so back and it doesn't work, no matter how I connect it or whatever I try. This was the one I bought...

At $29 it obviously more expensive but EMU is a good name and it's got far better reviews than the cheapy one I bought. Although I don't need it for either of my current keyboards which both have USB B ports, I went to an open mic night recently that provided a keyboard, so I just took my laptop, power pack, USB interface, and a few leads intending to plug into their kit, but I couldn't because it didn't have a USB B port and I didn't have a MIDI lead (although if I did I'm guessing I'd have the latency problems that your experiencing). I'm intending to do the same thing in the future so the EMU interface could be very useful.
