Subject:Re: VK8-M Leslie Tweaks
Chipster,
I'm flattered that you asked me for help.. I'm tearing up.. (I've been used and abused on another forum for a couple of days in a row and I'm suffering from a little shell shock).
First off, there are a number of folks on this list that are far more knowledgeable about the VK8-m's than I am, and I'm sure they'll speak up and provide some assistance when they can. I've used one and I've had access to them in the music store I worked in, but unless you've owned one a particular clone and used it and tweaked it extensively I'm not sure that you really "know" a clone.
That said, a couple of things.. first.. contrary to what you've heard about the C/V, I know folks on this and other forums that absolutely think it's the best C/V out there. The VM-8 also gets a lot of praise for it's amp sims and good overdrive. The general consensus, and I would agree, is that the leslie sim isn't very good.
Now I'm going to be frank (as usual.. and it always gets me in trouble).. but the best thing your friend could do for this module would be to buy a Ventilator (mini or ventII) or a Burn leslie sim. This would dramatically improve the sound.. HOWEVER, that's an additional $500 on top of the $400 that your friend paid for the VK8-m, and almost gets you to the cost of a VR-09 which is an updated Version of the VK engine, with full 61 note keyboard, drawbars a virtual analog synth and a roland sample player engine with very nice EP/AP/Clav/Strings and much more, all in a 12 pound package!!
So, all things considered what's my best advice.. tell your friend so return it.. or resell it and buy a VR-09 IF it's financially affordable.
I bet you didn't expect that answer did you.
Regards,
Craig MacDonald

I have a really good friend that bought one of these off ebay for 400 bucks against my advice (although I had not idea he could get one that cheap). I have heard the sim and C/V is not great on these but it can be tweaked. Anyone (Craig?) aware of any specific adjustments. I go to his house often and do not take equipment. I end up playing piano on everything cause he doesn't have a decent organ patch anywhere. He calls me today to tell me about his purchase which now makes me feel guilty. I don't want to go down next week and not use it. I have not played a VK8 or the module so I may be prematurely critical.
