I go to my clone, a VK8M, as well when I want to do a variation on a theme to a song.
How many times has a console player wished they could tweak things and interface as easily as a MIDI connect or a 1/4 phone patch? That's why when I worked for Lowrey, I was intrigued by their top of the line that could play stacks of different instruments off one board.
Today the sky's the limit, right?
I used the clone 8m on a new song a few hours ago straight into a 145, turned up the overdrive at the 8m just a touch of reverb at the church setting. Still, setting that up brought back old memories of geez I used to do this every night but that's when my back had my back. And while you're inspired, the less setting up one does, gets that idea in the recorder faster to where you don't lose sight of it nor run out of energy. Constantly fighting logistics.
Although I could MIDI out to a Motif to get a string pad on top of the tonewheel, it is convenient to just stack things on one board at the push of a button, so yeah getting an all in one station has its merits.
The 09 is a stage board, let's try pushing it for recording.
At this point just getting a convincing sound is key, over how many fingers you need to move.
From what I've read about Goldy, JK and he would not see eye to eye on things if my sources are correct, but here we are discussing Goldy's contribution to those two songs as for our end it was what made those songs ring out better even if it was all just serendipity. I'm building me a Vibratone out of old console organ styro leslie parts just to get that single rotor Goldy tone.
But with the new 09 you may get there faster specially for live.
As for JK and them, quirky how a Canadian band could write a great pro America song like Monster.

I normally don't play clones, but I figure, on the days when I am, I should take advantage of the fact that I can change the character of the organ and Leslies so easily. It would be nice to have a GSi Burn or a Neo Ventillator, too -- I would really like to be able to "move" the "microphone" closer to the lower drum in my Goldie McJohn organ. Especially if it was possible to send MIDI changes to the simulator when changing registrations...
When it comes time to doing the the Goldie McJohn registration, I will probably listen to both "Born to be Wild" and "Magic Carpet Ride". ... IIUC, both those songs were recorded on Lowery organ and the broken Leslie 122. It will be interesting trying to get those tones out of the VR-09.

getting a born to be wild rotor tone sounds cool. i saw JK and steffenwolp in a small club in the city of the angels but it was so dark on stage and JK was such a charismatic dude, i plumb forgot to look for goldy or how the organ was set up.
