Subject:Re: VR-09 Review
If I had the two side by side I could provide a good comparison but it's difficult to do feature by feature when it's been a while since I've spent time on the VR700.. Off hand, the VR-700 has waterfall keys (76 I think) and it's an awesome feeling keyboard, quite a bit better than the VR-09! I don't think the percussion goes through the C/V (like the VR-09) which is good, and if I'm not mistaken it has all the different amplifier types that VR fans love. The VR700 is the VK8 engine, I believe, vs the VR-09 which is supposedly based on the VK7, and it doesn't have the updated leslie sim(s) that are in the VR-09.. both the VR-09 and the VR700 can benefit from an external leslies sim like the Burn or the Ventilator.
I didn't pay much attention to the VR700 other features.. (I mostly focused on the organ) but the VR700 basically has the organ and "ensemble" parts which is the same as the VR-09's samples (AP/EP/clav, brass strings etc in fact I bet that most of them are the exact same samples), but the VR700 doesn't have the VR-09's virtual analog synth and neither does it have the VR-09's "live" performance interface. Not that the VR 700's interface is bad, just that the VR-09's is better for live performance, especially the effects section.
That's about the best I can do from memory.. hope that helps!
Regards,
Craig MacDonald

Thanks for the great & thorough review, Craig. As a quick impression. how does the VR-09 compare to the VR-700? I'm looking around for something to replace my aging Roland Phantom (although I have somewhat of a problem endorsing Roland's build quality compared to you, judging from my last few of their products). I would prefer a replacement with more than 61 keys but with the extra sounds & file playback capability the Phantom has, although I know neither the 09 or 700 plays sequences like a true workstation. I know the 09 is newer but don't know how much editing capability, feature set, etc, the 700 has in comparison. Right now I'm using an XM module with a Vent so know that will be better than either Roland product. Thanks.
PS - Hope you're a proud Grandpa by now!!
