Subject:Re: Kronos CX3

Sorry David ... didn't mean to offend. You're a killer player and your contributions to the KRS-06 soundset are smokin'! And I agree with you, that Kronos' CX3 engine (particularly the KRS-06 update) is as good an emulation as just about anything else out there. I'm just a bit miffed that Korg hasn't seen fit to showcase it in a manner befitting a clonewheel that (IMO) absolutely smokes both H/S' and Nord's! I'm also somewhat befuddled that MacDonald seems to see it as "almost" up to the competition ... but that's that guy's opinion. I think that, given a righteous rotary sim overhaul, the CX3 engine could give MOJO a great run for the proverbial purse!

Of course, those of us who own and use Kronos know beyond all doubtt that pretty much nothing else can even come close to touching it as an all-in-one workstation solution.

For the record (and as a former broadcaster and theatrical director), your clips in the video were just fine (you didn't over-play the part, but you could stand to pick up the pace a smidge and blink every now and then...and the lighting was swell). I would just like to see fewer talking heads and subtitles and more product demo. Sure, testimonials are good (as are the obligatory bows), but I'd rather be able to hear enough demonstration of the engine being put through its paces to give me adequate opportunity to listen critically and pick out all of the nuances that make this engine great. Korg isn't going to sell me another one ... I have mine and know how great it is. Their expansion market is (again, IMO) the former XK3c, Studiologic, MOJO and other clonewheel owners who are moving to H/S SKs, Nord Stage series instruments, Casios, etc. for the inferior (to Kronos' anyway) "extra sounds."

Again, this ol' fart's opinion! Oh why, oh why do I keep opening these damn wormy cans?

Peace,
Fox

Hi Fox and all...

I am sorry that my answer was a bit unclear. I thought that Korg did an excellent job with the new sound set for the Kronos. It is every bit as good as anything out there right now... Especially for those who want to perform with an "all in one" workstation (like I do now).

And just to clarify, I do not have any working relationship with Korg. Jerry asked me if I would be interested in helping and of course I said yes (it is impossible to turn down such a nice guy!). I am not an employee or endorser of anyone. The video was written and edited by me (and poorly performed, if I say so myself)...

Now see Craig ... I disagree with your perception of the CX3 engine as "almost" up to the standard of the current crop of clones ... I find the KRS-06 incarnation to be at least as good as every other clonewheel engine out there (with the exception of MOJO), but feel it is held back by its rotary sim (as are the vast majority of the others).

There really is not a good demo of the CX3 KRS-06 on line that I can find, and the stuff you hear in the two vids posted earlier just seems to exhibit a hollow sound, which I blame on the sim. Mine doesn't sound like that stuff. That's why I wanted to know what David "really" thinks ... but he sort of left us with a bit of a non-answer, "All of my B-3s sound radically different", which could be to his advantage in maintaining a good professional working relationship with KORG, but still doesn't thoroughly answer the question, at least to my satisfaction (which I can't seem to "get no").

My classic vintage Hammond consloes all sound pretty much the same (as do my C-3 and A-100s) with slightly unique "character" traits (percussion attacks, key click, c/v variations, hotter wheels, etc.) primarily due to differences in age and consequent electrolytic component degradation. But decidedly NOT radically different. I DO have one B-3 with a preamp I hot-rodded in the 70s that sounds significantly different (hot and nasty!), but it wouldn't, were I to restore the A028 to its original state, and I would not describe the difference as "radical," nor outside the standard deviation, such as it is..

The CX3 update in the new Kronos is excellent and it takes the older CX3 engine and improves it in a number of ways.. bringing it (almost) up to the standard of todays clones. [snip]

You know, it's really good! It just depends on what you are comparing it to. All my organs sound radically different from each other.

Honestly though, David ... how close to "that sound" does the CX3 engine actually come?
