I don't know, replacing the tubes in the XK3 made a radical difference (for the better)...

Yeah, we get that. This seems foolish, and unnecessary. Obviously, it's not that people are looking to use a different tube (though, what if they did?), but that they want to be able to replace it (themselves) if it fails. And tubes do fail, get damaged, whatever. Imagine if the tubes in a Marshall head were inaccessible.
