Altec always had fast woofers compared to most everyone else. Their 15 inch woofers were faster than some competitors 8 inch models. Hence excellent transient response.

Sounds completely logical to me. All things being equal, an 8" woofer will generally show better transient response -- what musicians describe as 'tighter' sound -- than a 10" or 12". It's just easier to design a small speaker with near-perfect attributes than a larger one. Plus, bigger speakers generally need bigger cabinets to be tuned to the box, sometimes bigger than the design would allow. I'd rather put a small speaker in an oversize box than the other way around.
The end problem usually comes from (lack of) volume, because a smaller speaker pushes less air than a bigger model. If loud volume AND tight response are needed, that usually calls for many little speakers. (Ampeg SVT, anyone?) But that has problems, too. Speaker designers can play tricks like increasing the throw of smaller woofers to push more air, but there are always tradeoffs -- can't fight physics.
________
As far as stereo field: The K8's are a wide-field monitor; the K12's are long-throw with a narrow beam; and the '10s are somewhere in between. So, the K*'s have a wider 'sweet spot' and are less picky about placement, making for a better stage monitor.

They just seem a little tighter sounding and I get a better stereo field. Of course, this is just my opinion. I use whichever pair I'm not playing my rig through for PA with a sub so I've had lots of opportunity to try both. I always play with a bass player, which definitely is part of my choice. Both have more bass response than I need.

yea I've heard that before , how would you say they differ from the 10's ? are the mid's a little sweeter or are they just a little less bottom heavy ?

I guess i'm at a loss here , I recently demoed my numa through both the k-10's and the new ev's ( the 12's ) both in stereo , didn't care for either one , the qsc's sounded better but definitely not enough to make a purchase , don't think my mojo will sound much better through these speakers , both of them sound pretty rippin through a 3300 though , guess i'm still searching for that elusive stereo headphone sound , sigh
