Most of the problem (to me at least) with the XK-2 was in the higher registers. Through a Leslie I bet it did sound good. For Leslies I usually used two 57's on top with a 421 on the bottom because of the larger diaphragm. For drum overheads my favorite is a pair of KM187's but mic's are a personal choice and everybody has their favorites. It's always good to experiment and sometimes you have a limited set to choose from so you work with what you have.

that seems to be a consensus. but there are those that like it. we did prod support for john legend, an xk2 was the clone through a leslie. same one rod likely used in fact. legend's foh guy, gordon mack thought the xk2 had a nice sound and they were contemplating taking one on the road. gordon, the type of sound guy who likes to use mxl 603's for drum overheads and leslie, which he did do that night.

The XK-2 was a dog compared to the XK-3 but a really good player makes most any keyboard sound good.
