Yes, MIDI apps require OS 5, which means iPhone 3GS or later. You could look to pick up a used iPod Touch, 3rd generation or better, as a relatively inexpensive solution.

I've been dreaming about a midified iPhone that acts as an expander since well before the first midi interface for iPhone came out actually, however my iPhone is a five years old 3g (still going strong!), so no midi for me there.

Since your sig says that you have an iPhone, a possible solution would be to get an interface for it and an app like SampleTank. I think that will do what you want, well within budget.

You might also want to look for a Roland JV-1080 or JV-2080. 64 voices, built-in JV soundset plus the ability to add one or more SR/JV expansion cards which cover every possible genre. Sound quality is much better than the Sound Canvas. You can find the JV-1080 for as low as $100 if you look very hard. If you have a little more to send a Roland XV-3080 is a great deal. It has the whole JV/XP soundset, 128 voice polyphony, plus the ability to use both SR/JV expansion cards or the newer SRX cards. After owning one (and selling one) many years ago, I recently picked one up on Ebay because I wanted certain sounds from a couple legacy SR/JV cards. Got mine for $225.

Thanks for the info everybody…Didn't thought it was going to be this hard to come by the right solution! The sound canvas could do perhaps…Or perhaps I'll actually reconsider the computer idea…
