Subject:Ashby Solutions Burn Remote Footswitch (cross-post from MojoMusicians)
Thanks, Bruce for making a pedal for me that "works" with Burn.
"Works"
is in quotations because, at this point, it is a "kinda-sorta" working
state, with a bit of funkiness in Burn's response. The pedal is wired
to Guido's specs and should probably work flawlessly. I look forward to
getting to the bottom of why the quirkiness in Burn's response. Since
the pedal is simply a set of switches and is wired to published specs, I
suspect the anomalies are software/firmware-related.
Ideally
(from my perspective), the pedal would mimic operation of Burn's right
two switches. Unfortunately, it does not, operating only with one
button switching between trem and chorale and the other switching
between whatever state is active and stop. I have yet to find a way to
make the "on/off" button trigger between tube/non-tube state and the
"fast/slow" button initiate "stop" mode when held, as the buttons on the
Burn will do.
This is sort of a difficult pedal to make, due to
the commonality of the ring and the need for tip and sleeve to never
connect. The nature of most switches I've used in the past is that they
ground to the pedal housing. In order for this pedal to work, the
switches must be completely isolated from the housing, if the housing is
made of a conductive material. Bruce uses switches that are isolated
in his design, which gets us around this issue.
Additionally,
traditional shielded stereo cable cannot be used for the
wiring without a great deal of difficulty, as the braiding tends to
short to the shield, no matter how you wire it, which makes
implementation of Guido's "criss/cross" adapter impractical. I suspect
that the switch housing ground issue is also why Mojo's pedals will not
work properly, even with the prescribed adapter, although I've not
tested continuity through switch ground to housing.
In all,
Bruce's pedal is the only footswitch solution I am aware of out there at the moment
for those wanting to control Burn off the floor in a non-MIDI
environment ... and the price is right, about $15 US under the cost of a
similar switch from Boss (the FS-6) plus stereo cable. The Boss unit
WILL NOT WORK, as it grounds the sleeve and tip/sleeve connectivity
cannot be avoided.
Hope others find this helpful.
Best,
Fox
