That's kind of funny, because you can pay at a level and price where you're simply paying for the music in advance. $10 gets you the music, $15 gets you the music and the video.
Look at it this way. In cases like these, he's taking the risk out of the project. Without Kickstarter, he'd have to fund the project out of his pocket, *hoping* to recoup the costs with sales.
(I admit not all Kickstarter projects are like this, but many musical ones are.)
Also, Jim is one of the hardest working dudes in the music biz. He's constantly doing something to support himself and his family via music - touring and recording with Janiva, his band Organissimo, producing records like Greg Nagy, programming sounds, piano tuning, and now this. I don't think he has anywhere near an "entitlement mentality."
