I use a SE AMA before my vent with a Nord C1 and I have to admit, it does a lot to shape the sound. I am alway getting compliments from organ guys who come hear me play.
To me, the pre-amp allows me to get that thick, gruffy distortion that you hear on all of those old jazz organ trio recordings. It's not that leslie distortion, the kind that most of the rock guys on this forum are undoubtedly loving from the vent, I as well.

The width of the organ tone changes when you get the preamp dialed in just right. Maybe my appreciation for this added benefit is more because I'm going after an aggressive jazz organ tone and not a Greg Rolie Santana type sound. There's a bit more subtlety in this sound than a rock sound. Getting an extra 8-10% from the preamp is worth it.

Lou's points are also well taken, it totally tames the high end shrill factor that most of these clones tend to have vs. a Hammond.

My 2 cents.
