Subject:Re: Signal path question....

Hi Craig,

OK, when I explain this I think you will understand.  I am using a v1.0 digital Korg CX-3.  It has unusually shrill high end, no matter what you do with EQ on the clone.  Yes, I have tried going directly from the CX-3 into the Vent and it sounds absolutely terrible, especially when the rotors are on tremolo.  I think the v2.0 CX-3 is not nearly as shrill as the v1.0, but I have heard some v2.0 owners say a pre-amp makes even the v2.0 sound a little better.  Actually, I use an Art Tube Pre between the CX-3 and the Vent and it really allows it to sound nice.

But I am probably the ONLY person on this forum still using a v1.0 digital CX-3, or at least it seems that way.  So, practically speaking for most clone owners, the pre-amp may not be needed.  But for a Korg v1.0 CX-3, trust me, it is.

>I think what people are saying is toss the Speakeasy Preamp... period... No one, except yourself, has suggested that you keep it in certain conditions (ie for use with the CX3).. what everyone else is saying is sell it, it priovides little to no value in the signal chain.

>I use my ventilator with my Kronos CX3 engine, and it goes directly into the Ventilator, and the Vent takes the digital edge off exactly like my speakeasy pre-amp used to.  So from my perspective, there's no need for the speakeasy preamp period.. even with the CX3 engine, it doesn't improve the sound enough to warrant it in the signal chain.  You said "I would never think of sending the output of my CX3 directly into the Vent without a pre-amp of you wouldn't think of some sort in between".. so my question is.. have you ever tried it?  IF not you might be very surprised.

>Getting rid of the Speakeasy Preamp seems to be the general concensus (at least so far).. I have seen suggestions that the Speakeasy AMA works well in the signal chain between a CX3 and a Ventilator.. but I'm not sure the difference with that would be very noticable or worth it, either.... just my opinion and YMMV.

>OK, so it looks like all the responses so far have been, "get rid of the SE pre-amp."  I would say, if you need to condition the signal to sound more like the correct raw Hammond sound, and the pre-amp does that, then keep it in the chain before the Vent.  For example, I would never think of sending the output of my CX-3 directly into a Vent without a pre-amp of some sort in between.  But if the basic sound from your clone does not need to be warmed and softened, and if the clone's output level is what the Vent needs, then the pre-amp is probably not needed.

>>Hi to all. What are the pro/cons to running my Speakeasy Pre-Amp before the Vent? Seems having the Vent last, then into my mixer, really becomes noisy. Also, it seems I have to adjust my gain level to high to get the Vent distortion. It's a Stage EX.   Thx!!!
