Subject:RE: What defines your "ideal" B3 sound?

You are looking for a B-3 combination like Seth has. B-3 isn't particularly
special but Leslie has mods that make it so clean with more output. I do
this type for customers on occasion.

Subject: [CWSG] What defines your "ideal" B3 sound?

Not entirely off-topic, since the purpose of a clonewheel is to emulate what
we think a great B3 sound sound like.

I've never owned one, nor have had many opportunities to play one, but I've
heard enough B3s to be able to paint a word picture of what my 'ideal" B3
should be. Now, whether the 'ideal' nature of the sound comes from the B3
(or any classic Hammond for that matter) itself, or from a combination of a
B3 with a Leslie I don't know.

This particular word picture comes to me after hearing Seth Justman's organ
sole in the J Geils Band's "Give it Me." It isn't necessarily the best
played Hammond rock solo, but to it encompasses the kind of Hammond sound I
wish I could attain.

Anyway, for me, the ideal B3 whines like a coyote in a valley with its foot
caught in a trap and howls like a lonely wolf. It wails like a distraught
gospel singer at the funeral of her husband. It's got the slight grit of a
lightly-washed grouting knife. The sound doesn't sting the air like a
lightning strike or a guitar note; it shoots out like a geyser, spreading
from a central column and sending colliding sound 'droplets' that dance and
fight with each other, cancelling out some frequencies while accentuating
others. In slower, mellower pieces, it has the winsome sadness of Billie
Holiday singing the blues at 2:30 in the morning in a 52nd Street drive. In
rockin' pieces, stacatto notes or chords sounds like the angry quacking of a
rabid duck or the snorting of an overstimulated horse. You don't just listen
to the sound with your ears; you absorb it through your feet and you gut as
well.

Pretentious, no?
