I think its more of the smaller population and the narrow scope of the topic that a forum dies. At least if its on a larger population forum, it can "ebb and flow" while other topics will keep the forum alive when certain topics wane. Sometimes too small is not the best way to go. I think its important to have iPad etc. use, new frontiers to be among the clone population this way we can see a trend and a direction. It may not be of interest to all, it may catch on to those not interested at the moment. It will be in the archives should one go in this direction.

if a sub-group dies due to lack of participation, isn't that just natural ebb and flow?

Doesn't that imply that the topic wasn't popular enough to keep
discussing it?
