once sub-groups form, those groups go dormant because not enough people are interested enough in a topic to post. The nice thing about the Yahoo Group format is that you can immediately go from group to group without to leave the format. Also, the open format of this group offers a great pollinization of ideas. If you don't want to receive emails, then you can shut it off (as I do). If a topic doesn't interest you, don't respond to it. Yes, these groups require moderation, but so do BBSers. You can have multiple people set up as moderators here in case the group owner doesn't want to be the sole babysitter.
