Subject:Re: just not getting it
I'm going to offer a slightly different perspective. If we look at the
OP's first comment (edited for brevity, not to take things out of context):

We might be talking about two things here: 1) an authentic Hammond
sound; and 2) a Hammond sound that cuts through a mix.
As anyone who has played a real B-3/C-3/etc. in a loud band context can
tell you, a Hammond doesn't always cut through a wall of sound. The B-3
is basically a mellow instrument, and can get buried by guitars, horn
sections, etc. Players used to do all kinds of things -- mic'ing just
the Leslie horn, changing the horn driver to an EV or JBL, using a
guitar/bass tube amp, etc.-- to try to remedy that situation.
Back in the early days of clonewheels, there used to be a joke -- but
with some truth -- that, "If it doesn't cut through the mix, it *must*
be a pretty authentic clone." The ROMpler has probably been tweaked a
little (or a lot) to fix that problem. Maybe the VB3 is more authentic
than your old rig, but doesn't cut through as well?
