Subject:New SK1 owner.
Well, with two new band jobs coming up, and my studio wurly starting to show some wear from taking it out, combined with smaller venues, I decided it was time to get a "tool" for the business. I basically need a decent (it's never going to be good when you're used to a real one) wurly, and an organ. I did a ton of research, didn't sleep before 3 in the morning the whole week because I was examining specs, demos, etc. and had it narrowed down to the SK1 and Nord 4d. I accepted that I was going to have to compromise the organ part of this equation, knowing budget wise the CX3 would have to go to pay for this. It kind of bummed me out because I truly was happy with the korg through a leslie. But I have the real hammonds in the studio as well as a CV for live when I really need double manuals, etc., so the Korg ain't my main organ. THe thing keeping me from the SK was the key depth trigger, but that was all on paper. The thing keeping me from the Nord was the SK had a lot more felexibility with the other sounds, and the nord sound wasn't cutting it. I figured it was time to stop reading and listening, and just play it. I found one an hour away, and after playing it for 5 minutes I told the guy to pack it up. I'll give a more detailed analysis later, but after playing one blues jam with it naked (the SK, not me! Naked meaning no leslie or vent) and vent half and half, I gotta say I'm impressed! THis was no compromise at all on the organ side of things. The two biggest downsides were there's no place to set my music on this thing! The other was I have to learn a new board. But this thing is fun to play, and sounds great live in a mix. It really cuts through! Funny thing is I tried this about a year ago and hated it! Don't know what changed, other than I had a volume pedal on it this time, which is important for me. The acoustic pianos are still crap though!
