Well then, your head would explode playing a small-scale board - my microKey controllers measure 5 1/2". Personally, I find that easily reaching an extra note (that's really all you usefully gain) is quite useful when you're sending a patch that benefits from wide voicing.
My Alesis measures 6 1/2", and the Edirols 6 3/8". I'm long past noticing that difference!
