Subject:Re: Joey D. Boring?

What silly statements about Joey.

I could understand " I don't really understand jazz at an advanced level and don't like it much - I'm more into the guys who stick with their blues scale noodling"
Nothing wrong with that, but to say that Joey is boring is just silly - your mind/ears are boring for not getting any of it. Then was Charlie Parker boring? Or Dizzy? How about Oscar Peterson?

Joey out plays and out grooves any living or dead organ player, sings well and plays a mean trumpet. Everything the greats like Smith ( who I can't stand ), McGriff ( who I adore ), McDuff ( who is God ), Young and all the rest did is there in Joey - with a healthy dose of McCoy/ Hancock etc. What's not to like? Unless jazz is not your thing - which is fine, but then why critique a down-to-the-bone jazz player? Have you heard him with Sanborn, or Gad, or Poncho Sanchez? He plays differently depending on the situation - can be very soulful when that's called for.

Emerson bores ME after 15 seconds - Rolly does before he even begins ( much preferred Tom Coster and especially Chester in that band ) - but I can understand why someone would maybe like them, and I wouldn't hold them to "jazz" standard re. their playing. Why hold Joey to an entry level pop playing standard?

I've seen Joey a couple of times with Steve Gad's thing - and it was the most exciting organ playing I have ever heard. I shared the stage with him when he was with Sanborn and got to hang with him - he is absolutely not arrogant at all, nicest guy you could meet.

Here's one of my favorite clips with him - where he is just introduced to the Diversi organ in Italy:

....and here's a full hours concert with the Sanborn trio - lots of jazzy playing and lots of soulful playing:
