Hearing someone's playing and understanding what's happening entitles one to express an educated, defensible opinion and makes for informative debate. However, hearing someone's playing and not understanding what's happening entitles one to.........keep one's opinon to one's self,  when commenting upon original, one-of-a-kind pleayers, (e.g. DeFrancesco, Auger, Smith et al,) IMHO.
 
I'll further suggest that if one can't differentiate between "modal" and "a la mode," much of the erudite commentary, within this thread, will go by with the rapidity of one of Joey's solos.
