Subject:Joey D. Boring?
I had to respond to this.
I don't find Joey boring, but sometimes the material he plays is fairly
stock be bop jazz. Be bop is most of what he does.
If you put Joey in Tower of Power, or Santana my guess he would come up
with some fairly classic stuff.
But like a lot of jazzers, he doesn't choose to go that route.
Make no mistake.... Joey is one of the most fluid jazz improvisers of all
time, on any instrument. And he can get pretty passionate about it,which is
when he starts to interest me
So if you want to talk about boring I wonder what percentage of people on
this list could hold their own doing just a duo as Joey often does playing
just instrumentals.
Most people would get pretty boring with their lack of harmonic content
and interesting ideas, which Joey does not lack.
Hey.... I turned on the jazz station yesterday and lasted about two songs.
The thing that bored me was the same old ding ding da ding rhythm on the
drummers ride cymbal.
But Joey doesn't bore me because I always hear interesting ideas in what he
does. Plus he knows how to make a clone organ sound good, which is
something that I commonly hear people screw up.
