My elder son Thomas (13) took up guitar about a year ago (his own idea, after I showed him how to play some simple stuff on bass), and he is on the way to becoming a fine blues player, with an emphasis on acoustic Delta blues and folk-blues material as well as mainstream rock and pop. He has also taught himself some piano (he really likes playing my Nord Electro 3). He has yet to join or form a band, but we have fun jamming, and it's great having another instrument enthusiast around the house.
Oh, and we have a great little independent music shop in our London suburb of Penge - Twang Guitars. They have a good stock of new and second-hand acoustics, electrics, basses and amps, the occasional Fender Rhodes piano(!) and guitar accessories. They also have an in-house luthiery/repair facility, a recording studio and they even offer music lessons. If you are in or near south-east London, check them out.

I agree with some of what you're saying but I don't think all is lost. I
passed on to my kids the love of creating music. My son, Zak, went on to
start and play in his own band after being in mine. Used to bring tears to my
eyes at a gig to hear a wailing guitar solo and look over and
remember/realize, "That's my boy!" Kinda falls on us to pass the torch so to speak.
Alas, "Mom and Pop" everything is all but gone. That's why it's up to Mom and
Pop at home to make sure the music lives on. I'll bet there are others in
this group that are doing or have done the same, yeah? ORF Bob

But it occurred to me that there is a kind of sad and serious side to
this, and that is of an aspect of family and social life that is rapidly fading
away, if it hasn't already. That aspect is of social and familial
(non-professional) involvement with the creation and performance of music.
