Mike,

Often people forget that overdrive comes from two places.. the leslie amp and the Hammond preamp.. so you should think of the vent/Nord exactly like that..  The reason the instructions suggest maxing out the overdrive on the organ is because overdrive often increased the gain in direct proportion to the OD increase and you don't want to overdrive the vent.  On my C2 the overdrive/gain ration was almost 1 for 1, but when I loaded the C2D OS it dramatically decreased the gain with OD).. so you have to explore your clone to understand it's gain/OD structure, and play with things a bit.

For normal playing I tend to set the Organ/clone OD for just a tiny bit of noticable distortion.. and then I use the OD in the Vent to get the majority of it.. I do leave a bit of headroom on the vent for those times when I want that real crazy Deep Purple/Jon Lord stack of marshalls sound in which case I sneak the clone OD up..

That's how I've been doing it, but play around with it, you might prefer a different setting.

Hey clonewheel friends around the world!

Bought a used vent wednesday night, brought it home, cranked up the nord stage rev b, got my percussive B patch....and

loved it!

i quickly figured out that using the vent in conjuction with the nord SIM made it sound strange and thin....so just using the VENT now.

question:

manual says to max volume pedal, then max overdrive, and then use volume pedal to increase both volume and overdrive, which i guess could simulate an overdriven leslie, but seemed a little too distorted for me.....thoughts on using the overdrive in conjunction with volume pedal?

Allen,

Sorry if I offended you.. the expression "I call bullshit" is generally seen as a funny expression (from a game called "bullshit")..  I was simply trying to be humerous as I corrected you on your harmonic beating suggestion. No offense was meant!!

However, the fact remains that you were mistaken.. there is no harmonic beating on this recording.. the sound you hear is nothing more than a "close mic" setting on the Ventilator which mimics (superbly) the various settings for mic placement from 20 feet away to jammed right into the leslie cabinet!  If you are a hammond player you may be used to sitting at a hammond in one corner of the room, with your leslie speaker on the other side of the room, what you will hear is a multitude of reflections, and this is very different from how a close-miced leslie sounds, or how a leslie sounds if you're sitting right next to it. A lot of recordings, especially rock recordings, have the leslies are "close-miced" and that's the sound that many of us want to emulate.. Santana, Steppenwolf, Rare Earth etc.. almost all of the classic rock albums that many of us grew up listening to were close-miced leslies..

Perhaps you didn't grow up listening to this, or this is simply not the way you like to hear your Hammond/leslie, as such you won't particularly like the sound of the ventilator (at least not on a close-mic setting), whereas many others like myself, absolutely love it.

Obviously you are entitled to your opinion, but if/when blatant mistakes are made in this forum, the members need to speak up to ensure that know one is misled.

Thanks for you understanding, and again my apologies if you were offended by my comments!

Craig

Hi Rob           Thank you for your  pleasant reply which is more than i have gotten from some members ie; "bullshit" etc and being shot down.I thought each member was entitled to their own opinion which is what i was giving  i have used the vent i have owned Hammond's and Leslies  i don't like the Vent my opinion which i believe like everyone else I'm entitled to. The harmonic beat which i referred to ( maybe a wrong terminology) seems to me when the imaginary rotor reaches a point where it is louder in a certain part not smooth like a real Leslie that's all i was trying to say not get into any argument I'm too long in the tooth for that my apologies if i have upset anyone it was never my intention Thank You
allan

Hey Allan

To me, Calvin's recording sounds exactly like ( or perhaps better than ) the

BV/122 rig that I owned and played for many years.

So I guess you don't like the sound of a Hammond console thru a Leslie

speaker ?

If you want to hear real harmonic beating, try a Hammond/Suzuki XB-2 through

a Leslie 145 ....... its like fingernails on a chalk board .........

I suspect that what you're hearing is the upper drawbar overtones which are

quite predominant in this recording probably as a result of the digital mike

placement, but a real leslie would sound almost exactly the same, with the

same drawbar combination and mike placement.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion, which has been previously

expressed here. I doubt that many organists would agree with you, and that's

my opinion.

Cheers/Rob
