Grill cloth, at least the better versions of them are going for a "transparent" effect as much as possible but of course that's never researched enough. Its costs and looks and only on the better speakers does a better grill fabric appear. yet as we all know it sounds different with them on or off. And if you cant tell the difference then train yourself to listen to music starting at a real low volume at first and then turn up the volume in increments over a few minutes of listening time. Your ear should awake to how the sound blooms and how your ears can perceive but you need to focus and take notice. As we use our equipment its all up to our own perception of what we like to hear. But having said that, being familiar with the leslie-franca, the louvered variety, is important as a reference.

What about speaker grill fabric on the SS leslie units? I covered the slots in my DIY horn rotor units with nice speaker grilles from an old Peavy guitar amp cab but made them removable. IMHO I prefer the sound without them. The speaker fabric only seems to muffle the sound to my ears. I really wish I could find an affordable empty louvered cabinet or top chop to load this all into!
